Will Installing Window Film Kill Indoor House Plants?

Like other common misconceptions about window film, many people think it’s harmful to house plants. But that’s not the case. Just as window film can help conserve energy, it can also help your house plants.

A Green Thumbs Up: How Window Film Helps House Plants Flourish

A Green Thumbs UpSolar control window film only blocks UV rays – not the red and blue rays that your plants need to grow and flower. And some plants will actually do better with window film, such as those that require less light (which are typically plants that have adark green color). Delicate plants will also do better with window film because it provides a more stable temperature. So, for example, if you live in a hot climate during the summer, areas near sunny windows can get very hot and be harmful to delicate plants. Or even in normal circumstances, do you have certain plants that always seem to dry out or wilt on sunny days? Window film will help your plants retain moisture better. Just remember that all plants – especially fussy ones – need time to adjust to a new environment, so if you see wilting or color loss after installing window film, don’t panic. These issues should disappear after a few days.

Frequently Asked Questions About Solar Control Window Film & House Plants

Will window film kill my house plants?

In many cases, where house plants are already receiving adequate light, adding window film to your home should not harm them. It may take the plants a few days to adjust to the new lighting conditions, in which case new plant growth and flowering may be impacted slightly.

For plants that typically wilt before the end of a sunny day, you may notice that they actually thrive even better once the window film is installed.

If you’re concerned that adding window film to your home will damage your indoor plants, consider moving the plant to an area of your home with less sunlight for a few days and see how the plant responds. Additionally, most nurseries or local agricultural agencies can provide advice on the amount of light a particular plant should be exposed to.

What types of plants need more light than others?

Typically, plants that are lighter in color (variegated plants) need more light than darker green plants as darker plants have higher concentrations of chlorophyll which makes them better able to use the available light for photosynthesis.

What kind of light do plants need to grow?

Contrary to popular belief, plants do not actually need UV light in order to grow. Plants require only blue and red light (which are not a part of the UV color spectrum). Blue light is responsible for encouraging chlorophyll production which helps the plants create strong and healthy stems and leaves. Red light helps during the early stages of a plant’s life by assisting with seed germination, bulb development and root growth and is also responsible for helping a plant flower and/or produce fruit.

Does solar control window film block natural light?

Solar control window film is designed specifically to block harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays while still allowing natural light into your home. There are many styles and colors to choose from to achieve the perfect balance between natural light and UV protection in your home.

5 Questions to Ask Before Tinting Your Car Windows

Tinting your car’s windows will offer countless benefits including protecting skin by blocking UV rays, cooling your car, and reducing glare – just to name a few. But, before you make the initial purchase, ask yourself these 5 important questions to ensure you are on the right track.

The Benefits of Window Tinting

How Long Will It Take In Text1. How long will my car’s window tint last?

The lifetime of window films are dependent on many factors including product type and quality, the climate, and the amount of direct sunlight your car is exposed to. Generally, most professionally installed automotive films are designed to last much longer than the typical owner will keep the vehicle; many films will perform well past 10 years.

Most automotive films are designed to perform well past 10 years

How Long Will It Last2. How long will it take to tint my car’s windows?

The process can take anywhere from 45 minutes to a few hours depending on how many windows are being tinted. If you’re only adding window film to the two front side doors, the installation will be much quicker than if you desire a full installation that includes all four side windows and the back window. The dealer installing your window tint may want to keep the vehicle for at least a half day in order to best complete the job and allow the film time to dry before returning the vehicle back to you. It is best to make arrangements for a ride on the day of your window tinting appointment. Tip: Make an appointment with a professional window film dealer to ensure a quality job.

Window tinting can take from 45 minutes to a few hours

Covered By A Warranty In Text3. Is my car’s window film covered by a warranty?

Most quality products come with a limited lifetime warranty. However, you should confirm the exact warranty length and stipulations prior to purchasing any film. Also, make sure you receive a manufacturer’s warranty that is completely filled out by your installer, so you’re covered even if by chance your installer ever goes out of business. It is important that you abide by all state and local tint laws. Most warranties will be void if your film installation is illegal. The local installing dealer should know all current tint laws that apply to you.

Which Window Tint Is Right In Text4. Which automotive tint is right for me?

In order to select the best film for your vehicle, you should consult a professional window film dealer. Dealers offer a wide range of products in a variety of shades and colors, as well as different styles and performance benefits. A dealer can show you swatches and talk to you about which auto tint best fits your needs. You should also understand the tint laws of your state. Professional window film dealers can also help you with selecting the best tint for your vehicle that still adheres to state laws. That being said, your window tint is entirely up to you.

Window tints come in a wide variety of shades and colors

Which Dealer In Text5. Which window film installer is right for me?

Never compromise. There are tons of companies in your area to choose from. Ensure that you have found the best professional window film installer by comparing customer service, prices, quality of products and brands, previous work, and the dealer’s overall reputation, as well as the reputation of the manufacturer or manufacturers of the window film they sell. With websites like Angie’s List and Yelp, it has never been easier to read reviews.

Remember, do your research. Gather quotes from multiple dealers and compare prices and the quality of the films. With these things considered, you are on your way to a more enjoyable ride!

Check with your local installing dealer about current tint laws

How to Prevent Graffiti in Public Restrooms

Clean restroom with mirrors that have protective film

Graffiti and destructive vandalism can have negative impacts on the perception of your business. Create an environment that deters instances of vandalism by quickly removing any evidence of graffiti or etching.

While there is no one simple way to prevent graffiti altogether, a few solutions exist to help reduce the impact graffiti has on your public restrooms.

Anti-Graffiti Film

One of the most commonly defaced areas of a public restroom is the mirror.  While there are many reasons for this, one is that graffiti is made to be seen, and nearly all individuals who use a public restroom will glance in the mirror, even if for a moment.

Using anti-graffiti film on restroom mirrors provides a barrier to help control vandalism. Once defaced, the film can be easily removed. The film is easy to install and replace, which helps preserve your mirrors and save money on replacements.

Have Employees Monitor the Restrooms

Whatever your business, it may pay to have employees regularly monitor restroom usage and check restroom conditions. This can be especially helpful during your busier times when there are more people and rowdier crowds who may be more prone to that kind of behavior. Not only will having employees check restrooms let users know the facilities are being watched, but it will help keep them tidy as well.

Remove the Graffiti Quickly

If your business does fall victim to graffiti, it’s essential to clean it up within 24-48 hours, if not sooner. Law enforcement experts claim that removing graffiti quickly is one of the best deterrents since taggers want their images to be displayed as long as possible. Taggers will notice which places leave them up longer and will avoid locations where their symbols are quickly removed.

Add Warning Labels

An inexpensive method to deter taggers is to put noticeable warning labels on the walls of your restrooms. This will let any vandals know that they will be caught and prosecuted to the full extent of the law. While this may not prevent all graffiti, it may sway anyone still considering the crime.

Adding signs asking customers to report any notice of graffiti will also help since you’ll be able to clean any graffiti up quickly.

Protect Your Restroom Mirrors with Madico®

Distortion-free anti-graffiti film from Madico is easily installed and replaced. Extensively tested for quality and durability, our films can help provide peace of mind that your restroom is adequately protected from graffiti taggers and vandals. Does Car Window Tint Fade Over Time?

protekt window film keeps your car finish looking new

Window film can transform the look of your car while cooling the interior and preventing damage caused by long-term exposure to the sun. While considering adding film to auto windows, many automobile owners like to know whether window film fades over time, causing a need for replacement during the lifespan of the car.

Automotive films are generally designed to perform well past ten years with proper care. According to NBC News, the average lifespan for an automobile is eight years, meaning that with proper care automotive window film should outlast the lifespan of the average automobile. Yet, there are many factors that contribute to wear and tear of car window film.

Here are some factors that impact the life of window film:

Factors Impacting Window Film Lifespan

Product Type and Quality

Elements of the product like the type of film used and how it was installed impact how long it takes for window film to fade. Lower quality films may display color fading within months of installation; higher quality films could last up to 20 years.

Film without UV ray blocking polyester fades faster than those with it, and films that contain extruded dye or metal deposits last longer as well.

The Car’s Climate

Before determining how long your window film will last, consider the location where you live. Living in a northern climate will allow your car’s film to last longer compared to if you live in a warmer, more humid, southern climate. No matter the climate, you can always choose to keep your vehicle in a garage to minimize climate impact.

The Amount of Direct Sunlight to which the Car is Exposed

Do you park your car outside every day or do you park in a garage? If your car experiences daily exposure to the sun, this will speed up the rate of fading.

Maximizing Your Window Film’s Lifespan

To choose a car window film that will last the longest, do careful research before making a decision. Once you buy and install the window film, maintaining and cleaning it will be crucial to slowing down the fading process and getting your money’s worth. Ask your Madico® dealer for tips on how to properly clean and maintain your film.

While window film can gradually reduce in effectiveness due to exposure to the sun’s rays, Madico’s automotive window films are covered by a lifetime warranty for as long as you own the vehicle, so you can trust it will perform for many years to come.

How to Darken a Room Without Curtains or Blinds

If your home has windows which provide a lot of natural light, you may be forced to decide between a comfortable amount of light in your home during the day or enjoying the view outside. Window shades, curtains, and blinds are often the first thought for light control, but many times fully block the outside view or conflict with the room’s aesthetics.

Window film is a popular alternative to shades or blinds for solar control. Window film is a thin laminate that can be installed on the interior or exterior glass surfaces of your home. Offered in a variety of shades and reflectivity options, these films provide flexibility in controlling the sunlight coming through your windows.

Here are a few of the many options Madico® offers to help you control sunlight in your home:

Types of Darkening Window Film

Solar Control Film

Interior view of a modern home with a spiral staircase and large windows.

Solar control films allow for some visible light to pass through the glass but will also absorb and block light to decrease the amount of bright light and glare in a space. The film also blocks the harmful UV rays that travel through windows during the day.

This type of window film cuts down summer heat and reflects light to your home in the winter to keep you warm, which will reduce your energy bill too. Madico offers solar control film in several shades and hues to match your home’s style.

Black Out Film

Residential home theater with windows covered in Black Out window film.

For rooms you want to be even darker, Blackout film is an excellent choice. An great choice for home theaters, bathrooms or bedrooms, Black Out film by Madico blocks 100% of light transmission. This film can be used to create privacy, for decorative applications, or to block unsightly views outside of your home.

Reflective Window Film

Vintage home with reflective film applied to windows

Reflective film is another effective way to darken a room while lowering energy costs. This type of film is designed to minimize the interior reflectivity of the glass to provide you with a more natural view at night. If you are looking for greater privacy and reduced glare, Optivision® Reflective window film by Madico might be the choice for you. It offers heat reduction, glass breakage protection, and a variety of styles to pick from.

Other Simple Ways to Darken a Room

Turn Off Extra Lights

Light in other rooms can often pass through cracks in doors and lighten a room. Turning off any unused light will prevent this and help save electricity and the environment. If soft light is desired, night lights or decorative lamps can offer a higher degree of light control.

Block Off Door Bottoms

In the same vein, blocking off the bottom edge of the doors in your house will stop light from coming through the cracks.  Major retailers sell draft-stoppers for under doors that can help block light as well.

Add Plants and Decorative Objects

To dim a room and add some decor, you can put a shelf up across your windows to place books, plants, or knick-knacks on. Don’t want to put up a shelf? If you have a big enough windowsill, place a potted plant or two in front of the window. A bonus: this will increase your home’s storage space too!

Increase Aesthetics and Energy Efficiency with Madico

All Madico solar control films were developed to block the sun’s glare and harmful UV rays from your home while enhancing its appearance. With the added benefit of energy efficiency, these films are an excellent choice for many residential homeowners. Browse our solar control films to find the film best suited for your home, or find a dealer near you to start planning an installation.
