Federal Tax Credit Available for Residential Film

Dec 5, 2022

By: David Smith

An important window film federal tax credit has been extended until 2032 for U.S. homeowners. According to the International Window Film Association (“IFWA”), the move was announced as part of the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022.

Individuals purchasing qualifying Madico window films placed into service from January 1, 2022, through December 31, 2025, may be eligible for a tax credit under Section 25C of the Internal Revenue Code.

The IRS allows homeowners to take a tax credit of 30% of the cost of solar control window film installed in their primary residence, with an annual maximum credit of $600 per taxpayer credited annually, as opposed to the one-time credit available under prior tax codes .

The tax credit is a direct dollar for dollar credit, or reduction, in the amount of taxes you must pay, not just a tax deduction from income.  In order to qualify for the credit in tax year 2022 through 2025, the window film must be installed from January 1, 2022, through December 31, 2025, and must be certified by Madico to be an Eligible Building Component Envelope in your geographic area.

Which Madico Films Qualify for the Tax Credit?

1. Determine your climate zone.

Qualifying products vary by the geographical climate zone in which you live. Refer to the maps in the Madico Manufacturer's Certification documents below to determine your climate zone.

2. Determine which window films qualify in your climate zone by glass type.
  • In some climate zones, only windows, skylights and door windows with wood or vinyl frames qualify.

  • If unsure about glass type, use the more conservative value.

  • Safety film versions of solar control films also qualify. For example, if RS40 qualifies, RS40 4mil and 8mil also qualify.

  • Window films qualify as insulation on IECC 2009 code and by the IRS as a 25c tax credit

  • Qualifications are based on IECC 2009 and amendments.

  • Please reference appropriate documents below for a full listing of qualifying films.

3. Print the Manufacturer's Certification document.

To receive the tax credit, consumers are required to submit Madico's Manufacturer's Certification and the IRS 5695 form with their Income Tax Return. Retain your original film invoice illustrating the cost of the window film only and a copy of the product's certification from Madico.
